FOtF Game 90: The Red Sox Will Not Stop Scoring Runs
This one was a good one, folks. David Price looked to get back on track after that dumpster fire of a performance against the Yankees. It wasn't a pretty start. Apart from the nine strikeouts, I think it's safe to say that it was a piss poor showing for the lefty. His command ceased to exist, and it showed. He threw 102 pitches in 4 2/3 inning. Those are the kinds of numbers we've only seen from Pomeranz this season. He did throw 2/3 of those pitches for strikes, but he lacked efficiency. The big kicker was that Price hit 3 batters, all in the fifth inning. Now, I don't think this start means much in the grand scheme of things, but it definitely did nothing to prove to Red Sox fans that he is an effective starting pitcher.
I haven't really been talking about the offense recently, especially the top of the lineup, because it's the same thing every game. Too many fucking runs to keep track of. At the point of yesterday's game when the Sox trailed 3-0, I thought it was going to be a tough game for the Sox. But I was so wrong. Mookie keeps rolling, and his OPS now stands at a staggerign 1.112 after a four hit night. JD Martinez continues to drive in runs like its a simple task. Xander remains the most clutch hitter on the team. All impressive, but one performance stood out to me the most. Benny Base on Balls had the game of a lifetime. It wasn't a three homer game or one where he hit for the cycle, but it was a beauty. He took FOUR walks in his first four ABs, then ripped a HR and a double. The patience that Benny has is admirable, and something that is very encouraging. I saw on twitter that he is the only Red Sox player not named Ted Williams to walk four times and hit a HR of the Red Sox.
As for the rest of the lineup, the bottom third is not slowing down. They continue to provide production, although most of it was in garbage time. Hey, nothing wrong with a little stat padding courtesy of a Double A reliever playing in the bigs. The Royals are so bad, and that was really apparent in the later innings last night. The Red Sox go for the sweep today with Ricky Rockets on the bump, and let's all hope for another Yankees loss today. Sox are still two up on the Pinstripes, and a season high 32 games over.
